RISK ... A leap of faith:
In a world where free play and exploration for children is being suffocated by rules and regulations it is paramount that we allow our children to take healthy risks, teaching them about danger and encouraging independent decision making and problem solving. Yes there may be the odd stumble over the tree roots and a few scratches or scrapes but as the little ones learn how to independently navigate themselves over logs and tree stumps, confidence and personal development will blossom.
There are obviously some important risks we need to take more seriously:
- Learning about and respecting dogs - The dog population has increased over lockdown. At the start of each session the children are advised on how to react if a dog approaches, stand still and leave it alone.
- Bites, stings and allergies - Most stings will hurt but are perfectly harmless. There are of course situations when a child or adult may have an allergy. It is essential for the Sally's Adventure Club team to be made aware of any medical conditions before each session. The responsible adult accompanying their child must bring all medication to the session and administer it when necessary.
- Oak Processionary Moths - These little beasties are growing in population each year. If left alone they are no threat but should anyone come in contact they can cause a very nasty rash or indeed trigger anaphylactic shock. For more information please visit https:// www.forestresearch.gov.uk/tools-and-resources/fthr/pest-and-disease- resources/oak-processionary-moth-thaumetopoea-processionea
- Whatever the weather.... not strictly true - If the winds are above 40mph or should there be storms battering the woodland then the adventure will be cancelled. Safety is our perogetative and no-one can challenge Mother Nature!
And of course COVID... what to expect on an adventure? - Sally's Adventure Club simply asks for everyone attending to be sensible. Following the government guidelines with a level head and being mindful of all around makes for a happy, healthy crew (https:// www.gov.uk/coronavirus)
- We make the most of the fresh air
- The children do mingle and say hello
- Nobody should attend if they are showing symptoms
- All of the Sally's Adventure Club team are double vaccinated and take regular lateral flow tests (and it is encouraged for all attending to take tests too)
- If you would prefer to wear a mask please do, whatever helps you feel safe and comfortable. The Sally's Adventure Club team does not wear a mask unless administering first aid.
